Playing with Prices & Streamlining my Writing Life

Pricing books and ebooks is always tricky.

There are no fast and sure rules. You can’t look up a pricing guide that everyone has to follow. There is no guide that says if it is so many pages price it at this amount. You can always look at the prices around you and try to guess which one would be the best for your book. Of course every book is different.

For the next few weeks I’ve decided to play with my book prices. The novels are lowering in price and the short stories are rising. $.99 is both unprofitable and become the gutter of the book industry.

So the new prices will be as follows:

My Lord Hades – $4.99 US

Persephone – $4.99 US

Love is Blind – $1.99 US

An Angel in Tartarus – $1.99 US

Once a Valkyrja – $4.99 US (this one is still reworking it’s way through the system so it’s available right now on B&N, Smashwords, and Amazon, the others are coming)

Prudr – $1.99 US

If it appears that it will be more profitable at their changed prices, I’ll be leaving them there. If not, I’ll be changing them yet again.

Streamlining my Writing life isn’t as easy as I thought.

I read a few articles by Kristen Lamb (When Do Writers Need Multiple Blogs? and Why Pen Names Suck & Can Make Us Crazy?) that have me rethinking how I’m doing things. I’ve once more started to spreading myself thin and getting stressed by everything that I “have to do.” Now I’m procrastinating and getting nothing done. I don’t want to do it, any of it.

Yes, I very much look like the little kid sulking in the corner vowing to never do it again. It isn’t a pretty picture. It’s not very business like. And it means that I have to do something about it. Hiding isn’t accomplishing anything so there needs to be another plan of attack.

I’ve started by rethinking every aspect of my online business, from my writing as Stephannie Beman, Anne Bheimon, and Jonathan Heggem to my cover design business. I’ve been evaluating  the lot of them for effectiveness. What do I need to get done, what is accomplishing my goals, and what is wasting my time. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m setting myself up for failure with all the things I think that I need that I really don’t or that I want to do. I need to focus. I need to be disciplined. I need a drink. 😀

My Conclusions? I need to streamline my businesses.

Do I need Jonathan Heggem? Yeah, since it’s a collaborative work.

I love my Anne Bheimon pen name, but do I really need it? While the genre for Stephannie and Anne are the same in that they write in the speculative genre, they are also different as Anne doesn’t write romance but fiction. But do I need her? Not really.

Yeah, I love The Writer’s Notebook, but do I really need it? No. I could blog about the same stuff here.

Do I need a newsletter? No. I offered it and no one really signed up for it in the 6 months it was posted.

Yeah, I love The Gossip Papers, but do I really need it? Is it the best use of my time? No. The content can just as easily be posted here.

Should I keep my writing and my design business as separate websites? That is a little harder to answer. I’m thinking yes, and then I change me answer to no. I’ve linked them and maybe that is enough.

Streamlining everything would be a wonderful. I spend more time social networking for two, sometimes three names, writing articles for SPAL and managing the website, updating my own websites, and blogging that I really don’t have time to spend with my family and doing chores around the house, or working on my books. Since my books and graphic designs are where I make my money, those should be more of a focus on those and everything should compliment that.

What do you guys think? What are your experiences? I would really love to hear them.

  1. My experiences are a jumbled mess BUT I will say linking designing and writing have many benefits – I’ve gotten purchases – and reviews – from people I’ve done work for. I’ve also made some friends that way. What I *tried* to do was have a blog for the at, a blog for writing and then everything on my website. sadly the art blog never gets used anymore, but I still use the website and the writing blog.

    On B&N/Smash etc my book prices are higher, but amazon book 1 is still .99. I tried raising it and sales completely dropped off 😦 meanwhile at the others they seem to increase as i hike the price…


    • LOL We do get ourselves into a tangle.

      I’m still trying to figure out how I want to set up everything. I had to go and make my cover design business official recently, so it’s all about trying to figure out how to do the rest of it so that people can find me and I’m not spreading myself too thin.

      I took a look at your websites/blogs, I loved the names and taglines. They all seemed to compliment each other.

      I thought I would raise the prices on the low ones because truthfully they aren’t being bought, so goofing with them isn’t going to hurt anything. I do find it strange that your books did better at higher prices in some places and lower prices in others.
